Episode 08: Dr. Ingemaud Gerber

Dr. Ingemaud Gerber

Functional Medicine Specialist

Saying that today’s guest wears a few hats would be an understatement. Dr. Ingemaud Gerber is a long way from her native South Africa, and the journey to Canada is a story in and of itself. Fast forward several years later and she is now a key member at Inliv Medical in Calgary, as well as Mom to three busy young ladies. Her passion for medicine brought her to become certified as a Functional Medicine physician through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, while also maintaining hours at a hospitalist…two very different systems and disciplines, indeed. The past years have brought significant change to her personal life, both challenging and rewarding, and somehow she managed to achieve her goal of completing an Ironman before her 40th birthday, which she just did at the end of 2021. I love Inge’s perseverance, bravery, and quest to help others live healthy, active, and fulfilled life. She has so much to share about her journey, we hope you enjoy our conversation.

Some takeaways from this episode include:

  • Inge’s unexpected journey from the government hospitals of South Africa, to rural Alberta and then to Calgary

  • why, after working in both private and public healthcare in Canada, she prefers to keep a foot in both systems

  • what functional medicine is, why it is a passion for her, and how it differs from traditional care

  • how conversations with friends led to a chance introduction to becoming certified in medical aesthetics, as well participating in an Ironman this past year

  • how the events of 2018 changed her life including a family cancer diagnosis, the end of her marriage, an unexpected closure at a previous clinic, and writing her functional medicine exams

  • the reality and rigors of training for an Ironman as a single, full-time working parent - and how the experience was one she will never forget

  • finding love, starting a new chapter, and now having six kids and two dogs under one roof

  • how she feels that she is in an even better place than her 10 or 20 year old self would image
